That's right, Walter. When Walter accidentally turns Lance into a pigeon (Yup! You read that right. the two ex-agents must work together to find the real criminal and put a stop to whatever his evil plan is. That being said, the best thing about this flick is the message it is sending. Through Walter's big heart, we learn the true meaning of friendship. Watching Walter have Lance's back through every set back in their mission is both heartwarming and inspiring. He also teaches us that violence isn't the answer. He shows us that acting with love and compassion is really what will make a difference in the world. The film is essentially a rip off of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs with a tinge of Trigun mixed in there especially through the character of Walter. From his interaction with his mother about how he's getting bullied at school to the end where he is saved by birds and even had his hair up a la Flint Lockwood once. He even has a tinge of Vash the Stampede in him, with his pretentious morals about pacifism which ends up getting him hurt at times. He lacks the depth these two characters have and even the appeal. He seems quite pretentious and won't shut his mouth so I can sympathize with Lance's annoyance with him. I mean, the idea about pacifism is a good message to send in a kids movie but it got moralistic to the point where he'd either end up getting himself hurt at points where self-defensive violence was necessary or somehow fazing villians with his kittens and glitter whereas most villains wouldn't care about anything cute when they're trying to attack their victims. The only good characters in there are the secondary characters which are the girl and her partners that I forgot the names of but they didn't even get enough screentime to have any sort of depth. All of the characters overall are either two-dimensional or one-dimensional.
Which brings me to how contrived this film is from its dialogue to its story to its characters. A lot of the dialogue was unnatural and talky especially through Walter, where at some points he even breaks the show, don't tell rule. There's even a bird who I can't remember the name of who somehow eats anything he sees. The film is full of cliches, the love at first sight relationship going on between Lovey and Lance (good thing that Lance didn't fall in love with her back) the character arc of the main character being seen as an outcast before he becomes a lovable, famous person, the relationship development of Walter and Lance and so on. Even a lot of the jokes were gross-out, some were funny though. Even the pacing of the story is way too fast, characters never die or get hurt very often, they're usually saved by some sort of plot armor, which means the tension is barely there.
The film had some good ideas about pacifism, being weird and working together with somebody you don't have anything in common with but fails to execute these ideas due to its uninteresting characters. Now, I would've been okay with the pacifism moral if that was part of character development where he starts off as a weak person who doesn't want to hurt a fly but then learns that using self-defensive techniques when the situation calls for it are okay even if they are violent, but there's none of that there and honestly, it would've been better and more refreshing than the character development he has. I also liked the voice acting, especially with how Tom Holland and Will Smith play off each other and most of the animation is decent except there are some cartoony looney tunes antics that like I said in my Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs review doesn't go well with a CGI animated feature film. And Walter's Flint-like character design is also a minus.
I don't see how this film is doing so decently with the audience. I give it a 4.8 out of 10. While I wasn't expecting much good out of this anyway, because it had a few good ideas, it was a very disappointing film that could've been decent if the characters and jokes were more original and compelling... It's just a stupid film that younger kids will have a good time with but anyone ten years and over would probably be better off seeing Little Women instead. This was a very mediocre animated holiday film to close the decade and year off with. Honestly, My Spy looks better and I hope that is a better version of Spies in Disguise.

A delightful holiday movie for all ages. This is an animated spy comedy adventure set in the slick, high-octane, globe-trotting world of international espionage. Super spy Lance Sterling (Will Smith) and scientist Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) are almost exact opposites. Lance is smooth, suave and debonair. Walker is…not. But when events take an unexpected turn, this unlikely duo is forced to team up for the ultimate mission that will require an almost impossible disguise-transforming Lance into the brave, fierce, majestic…pigeon. Walter and Lance suddenly have to work as a team, or the whole world is in peril. I like the part when they step on goo even though its actually silly string.

Directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane and Production Designer Mike Knapp shared their filmmaking process, sneaky easter eggs & cameos, and Will Smith fanboy moment. Spies in Disguise Directors Troy Quane and Nick Bruno and production designer Michael Knapp met us at the Disney Studios lot on a Saturday morning and they brought a big gift: a screening of the film. We were some of the first audience to actually see the full, completed film. So check out the  Spies in Disguise parent movie review as well as some of my favorite Spies in Disguise quotes. And Im thrilled to share these fun facts about the making of Spies in Disguise that will make your own screening of the movie more delightful! 1. The Directors Make a Cameo Easter Egg in Spies in Disguise And since they were sitting in front of us, it was hard to miss! Im an easter egg and cameo lover so I had to know if that was them in the movie. “It was us! Nobody else would cast us. It was a silly joke we put in for the crew and people kept laughing at us to the point we kept it, ” Troy Quane explained. “I dont think they were laughing at us, but with us? ” laughed Nick Bruno Troy agreed. “Well take any kind of laugh we can get at this point- were not proud. ” Be on the lookout for these guys! Nick Bruno, myself, and Troy Quane at the Spies in Disguise screening. 2. Lances Shape Evokes a Martini Glass Will Smith: shaken, not stirred. Errr… something like that. As production designer Mike Knapp explained, they started the process of this movie trying to decide what they wanted the style to be and what they wanted it to say about the film. Mike Knapp: “We started looking at shapes that made us think of stealth- and so you think of like stealth bombers, stealth planes, sort of polygonal-shaped language you see. And we started exploring Lances design and he had some of that polygonal-shape to it- he) evokes a martini glass that we loved. ” Will Smith, shaken, not stirred. 3. All The Animals In the Movie Are Straight Animals- Except For Lance It was important to make everything grounded in reality, including the other birds in the movie. They were all drawn as straight animals. Lances pigeon form, however, had some distinct differences to it: a bowtie and floating eyebrows. Troy Quane: “If everything was ridiculous, then you lose the contrast and you sort of lose the impact that has on Lances journey. ” 4. Color Is Practically a Character in Spies in Disguise Color plays a huge role in this movie and that was by design. Look for clear distinctions between the characters and the teams involved (the agency is one color- turquoise, Walter is another- warm tones, Lance has distinct cool blue hues, etc. Spies in Disguise director Troy Quane 5. The Movie Was Pitched As Skyfall With A Pigeon (Instead of Daniel Craig) Think Skyfall- but erase Daniel Craig and add a pigeon. Double O- coo roo-ctoo-coo! Thats what we the filmmakers were going for in relation to the realism and tone of the film. They were shooting for an 80/20 split so the locations like Venice felt extremely real. Nick Bruno:   “It goes back to that Daniel Craig pitch; you want 80% of realism. So you feel the world is real. Right? That also helps you feel that the danger is real, because if everything was cartoony, if you watch Daffy Duck, you can take a frying pan to his face, you know, because hes so cartoony, you dont ever actually believe hes in danger. ” 6. This Is The First Spy Movie For A Lot Of Kids: They Wanted To Make Sure It Said Something Important Within all the themes of Spies in Disguise, theres one that parents are going to appreciate. And it was important for the filmmakers to say something with this story, to make sure kids got a message or two as well as a fun film. Troy Quane: “Its really about perspective. It really is up to up to the heroes to decide who they want to be and how they want to carry themselves the world which we felt was a really timely topic. So all of those pieces have sort of come together to sort of say, its easy to say youre one thing or another thing. Its really just about shifting perspective as to what that is and its about being true to who you really are in the world. ” Nick Bruno: “You know, when we kicked the movie off, we felt by making what will probably be the first spy movie for many kids. We felt a real responsibility to say something with it. When you spend all this time, money and just passion creating every frame, in a movie, you want to make sure youre saying something important with it. And we thought it was a good opportunity to tell kids as you move forward in the future, its how important it is to work with one another despite how different you may be. And if youre going to be a good person, you have to hold yourself to a higher standard and thats not easy. But its important. ” 7. The Role of Lance Was Written For Will Smith (But They Never Thought Theyd Get Him) This is where I completely connected with the directors of Spies in Disguise. Yall, they fanboyed Will Smith (just a little) and they were not ashamed for a second about it. Same, Nick and Troy. SAME. Nick Bruno: “When we started this, we knew we had to create a new spy, right? We were really searched inward to like, who are the heroes we had growing up? And were like, Will Smith. Will Smith, right? And the entire time were like, theres no way well ever get Will Smith. And we forget that honestly, because were a bunch of nerds back at a studio with our crayons, making movies. You forget that youre making a real movie and then you have a shot of meeting somebody. So the day they said lets actually bring him in. Lets see what he wants to do…” Spies in Disguise production designer Michael Knapp and directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane. Troy Quane: “Yeah, lets bring him in! You think- this is gonna be great, this is gonna be easy. But then you hear that big voice, high fiving people as hes coming down the hall- and I look over at Nick whos grabbing his knees, bent over, like- oooohhh- Im gonna be sick- … [we all laugh as Nick pantomimes his actions that day] No, I need you, were a team! ” Nick Bruno: “You know, I think I think what we were fortunate enough is we had a good philosophy to speak about on this movie and a message so and so you know, Will lit up right away with it. And he was very excited because if you were to know Will, its very important that his movies say something. And particularly when were talking to children, its very important that we have a strong message. ” Whats Spies in Disguise About? Spy Lance Sterling (Will Smith) and brilliant scientist Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) are total opposites in pretty much every way. Except that they work for the same super-spy agency, theyd probably never have met. Where Lance is smooth, suave and debonair, Walter is…not. But events transpire that require this odd couple to team up for a mission to save the world. The only problem? It requires Lance to go undercover as a pigeon. Yup, a pigeon. Connected spies in disguise season. Ive seen the movie as well it was awseome. We all know the girl who doesnt like him will get him. When I saw Charizard he was my most favorite Pokemon and he will always be my favorite Pokemon. It has to be better than norm of the norm doesn't look to good on the comedy side maybe a 5 year old would enjoy. Another episode of why is this in my recommendation. When a mission goes wrong, Lance Sterling (voiced by Will Smith) the coolest of spies, and his sidekick Walter (voiced by Tom Holland) a geek specialising in gadgets, must join forces. If this odd duo can't work as a team, the world is in peril. I just realized after multiple viewings of this trailer that Wednesdays pigtails are in the shape of nooses. Okay, now that is very clever.

 

If luigis looks this bad off drugs then I dont even want to know what wario wants to look like. That only part I liked about the movie was when will says now thats hot.
